More than 500,000 Vietnam and Vietnam Era veterans reside in Texas. There were 3415 Texans that were killed in action in Vietnam. As of 2011, there were still 107 Texans who had not returned home. During the war, 12 Texans were recipients of the Medal of Honor. Their citations can be read here and here. While the war is history for some, the healing continues for others. That’s why the Texas Capitol Vietnam War Monument™ is being created.

In May 2005, during the 79th Regular Session of the Texas Legislature, Senator Juan "Chuy" Hinojosa and Representative Wayne Smith sponsored House Concurrent Resolution 36 authorizing a Vietnam War monument on the Capitol grounds. Beginning September 1, 2011 donations to help build the monument are matched dollar-for-dollar by the Texas Historical Commission to a maximum $500K. Monument dedication is anticipated in early 2013.
